Beagle Dog Training
Why do Beagles seem stubborn?
There are a couple of reasons that Beagles appear to be stubborn. Independence is by far the most commonly demonstrated Beagle trait and one that can cause Beagle dog training to be very difficult. An independent Beagle is often considered a hard-to-train one. The other reason that many people consider Beagles to be stubborn is because of their dominance. A dominant Beagle will exhibit behavior that makes them seem to be untrainable. Let’s look at how these traits can jeopardize Beagle dog training.
Independent Beagles are often viewed as renegades who never need to please anybody. While they unquestionably love their owners, their drive to please them isn’t as strong as it is for other types of dogs. This is what makes Beagle dog training so difficult.
However, the fact that Beagles are independent by nature doesn’t mean that they are impossible to train. What it does mean is that you will have to know what works with them and what doesn’t. A big mistake many Beagle owners make is to apply force in correcting their habits. When performing Beagle dog training physical corrections such as hitting and yanking generally leads to passive resistance. Once your Beagle has taken this stance it will be very hard, if not impossible, to get him to obey your commands.
Keeping his independence in mind, how then should Beagle dog training be accomplished? The best way is to find out what rewards elicit a positive response. An adequate reward will give you the advantage and your Beagle will surely be more accommodating to his training.
A dominant Beagle is one that explicitly shows you that he won’t be bossed around. He is the pack leader. While your independent Beagle will simply ignore your commands, a dominant Beagle will show you his discontent of being ordered around. If your Beagle displays defensive behavior while guarding his food or toys, shows a readiness to launch into a fight, or growls when not allowed to do what he wants then he considers himself dominant over you. To overcome this obstacle you must become the Alpha dog.
Beagle dog training of a dominant Beagle can only be accomplished after you prove yourself to him. He must recognize your authority or else your role will be lower on the pack pecking order. For successful Beagle dog training you must establish your authority. Once your leadership is firmly established and your Beagle understands that you hold the Alpha dog position your training sessions will go very smoothly.
