Stop Beagle Begging

Is your Beagle begging constantly? Want it to stop? You’ve come to the right place.

Why is your Beagle begging?

The most important rule should be obvious; you should never give your Beagle food from the table. Most people follow this rule but that’s not enough. Some people will adamantly tell you that they never feed their Beagle from the table but afterward they scrape their plates off into his dish. If you share your food in any way at all with your Beagle, even if you give him dog food (which you should) but then you add some gravy or other leftover food scraps to it to “enhance” the flavor, that’s going to strongly encourage your Beagle begging. Your Beagle knows what you’re eating and if he’s used to getting some if it with his meal then he’s going to try to speed up the process. When you experience your Beagle begging while you’re eating he’s actually saying “What’s going on, did you forget about me, why are you making me wait? I want to eat right now!”

Don’t reward the Beagle begging behavior

As with all other Beagle behavior, anything that is rewarded is continued. When you put those leftovers on his food you’re confirming that the begging worked, he got what he wanted.

The simplest way to absolutely end your Beagle begging once and for all is to absolutely have the begging fail. If your Beagle never gets the reward for his begging then he will give up and stop. The same goes for when you’re away from the table and just having a snack. If he looks at with you with those big sad eyes don’t give in. If you decide to “share” then you’re further reinforcing the Beagle begging behavior. Every time you share your food with your Beagle, no matter what the circumstance, you’re encouraging him to beg.

In general dogs are creatures of habit and your Beagle is no different. People like to think of their pets as humans and therefore they try to treat them as such. That makes what I’m about to say sound counter intuitive: Feed your Beagle the same thing at the same time every day. Beagles actually prefer to have a routine with no surprises. The more consistent you are by feeding at the same time and not sharing any of your food, the Beagle begging behavior will completely stop.
